O Captain! My Captain!: R.I.P. Robin Williams

With committing suicide on August 11, 2014 Robin Williams is not only leaving his wife and three children behind, but also made the world a lot less funny.  His death went totally viral and people around the world started to say goodbye to a hero by standing on a table as he did in his movie “Dead Poet Society”. Oh Captain! My Captain! You’ll be missed.

Robin Williams also  told his students in Dead Poet Society that “No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world” and he sure did change the world. He made us smile as Mrs Doubtfire and cry in Good Will Hunting. With his passing we’re reminded how fragile our life can be. His struggle with depression, drug abuse and alcoholism was well discussed by the media and there are still people asking “Why was he depressed? He had more money than he could spend and a lovely family”. Fact is that no one will ever know what Robin Williams was going through.

Success doesn’t protect from depression neither does money or a lovely family. There is a massive lack of awareness about depression as an illness in today’s society. We all don’t know how many times he survived suicidal thoughts before taking the final step. The struggle is real and so is the pain.

With his death, there is another change to raise awareness about depression and suicide. It’s still a very long way to go, but if you are struggling, please know that it’s okay to talk about it. It’s okay to escape the day and its okay to feel empty. But please know that you’re not alone in your battle. Things can get better.Everyone has something to hold on whether its music, movies or books. Even the smallest sight of hope is a proof that your life is worth living.
