Australia is the home to some musical diamonds, one of them is the production duo, Set Mo, who are about to head out to tour Australia and New Zealand within the next few weeks. Before the guys packed their bags, we were able to ask them some questions about their journey and mental health and please take it away!
Hi guys, thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us. How are you today?
We’re both great thanks, just finished up for the day in the studio.
You’ve just release your new song “Nightmares” which is a song about anxiety. Would you mind telling us a little bit more about the backstory of the song and how it felt releasing a song about such an intimate topic?
We wrote this song in London last year with a talented lad named Scott Quinn. We met Scott the day we wrote and it actually all came together really quickly, in just a few hours in fact. We started the backing and then Scott lay down the haunting vocal choir part that is throughout the song and that set the tone of the track.
As we are massive music fans ourselves, do you guys remember the first memory that is connected to music?
We both grew up in households where music was always being played. Both our parents were keen music lovers and I think always having music on at home gave us real connection to it from a very young age.
Being an artist and releasing new music, do you feel any pressure coming along with your career?
Of course, but it’s good pressure. The main pressure actually comes from ourselves. We always try to be better artists, write better music and stay creative. It’s good, it forces you to be the best you can be.
Besides music, do you use other artistic impressions to communicate?
We’ve actually been super hands on with all the visual aspects of Set Mo. We’ve either done the artwork ourselves or worked closely with photographers or artists. Same with music videos. We really like having this separate creative process and being able to help bring our music to life visually.
The mission of our website is bringing people together with the power of music and letting them share a story to a song that is connected to something special in their life as a song that helped someone might be able to help someone else too. Is there a specific song that helped you and would you mind sharing the story?
This song helped me through a bit of a tough time a few years back when I parted ways with someone in my life. It was a song I already knew and then it strangely came to me in a dream and I had it stuck in my head. It took me a few days to figure it out what it was and then when I found it I just listened to it on repeat. It definitely has quite a sombre tone to it but there’s something about it that I find quite positive too and it really helped me during that time.
It seems like on the one side there are people who say: “Music saved my life” while on the other, people deny that music itself has the ability to save someone. Would you mind sharing your own opinion on this?
Music certainly can have a profound effect on peoples emotions. Listening to different styles and moods of music can have such on impact on ones demeanour.
Before we come to an end. Is there anything you would like to say to people who are struggling at the moment?
Music can have a huge impact on people and listening to the right music for someone struggling can be amazing. We also can’t recommend enough talking to someone. Too often people feel alone while struggling and not willing to open up to others. It’s important to share how we’re feeling. If others don’t know they can’t offer you help.
Again, thank you so much for taking the time Set Mo and we wish you all the best with your monthly releases this year!
